The Willy-Nicky letters consist of 75 messages Wilhelm sent to Nicholas between 8 November 1894 (Letter I) and 26 March 1914 (Letter LXXV). The two emperors corresponded in English and were accustomed to calling each other "Willy" and "Nicky" but would use their counterparts' formal names in formal communications. Nicholas was a grandson of King Christian IX of Denmark and a nephew of Queen Alexandra, consort of King Edward VII, as his mother, the Empress Maria Fedorovna, was the former Princess Dagmar of Denmark. Wilhelm II and Nicholas II were third cousins (both were great-great-grandsons of Paul I of Russia) as well as being second cousins once removed (both were descended from Frederick William III of Prussia) and Wilhelm was a first cousin of Nicholas's wife, Alix of Hesse and the eldest grandson of Queen Victoria. The Willy–Nicky correspondence was a series of messages (letters and telegrams) relayed between Wilhelm II, German Emperor, and Nicholas II, Emperor of All Russia during the first months of the First World War. On a more conceptual level, Lynn offers carefully nuanced revisions of many standard views concerning the military origins of absolutism, the nature of the military revolution, and the alleged modernity of Louis XIV’s army. On one level, the book reads like an encyclopedia of military lore, with admirably clear sections on administration, supply, ranks, officer corps, recruitment, morale and mentality, militias, discipline, weapons, battle formations, artillery, drill, logistics, tactics, strategy in the field, siege warfare, fortress construction, and much more. Lynn aims not only to examine every aspect of this “giant” from Henry IV through Louis XIV, but also to explore in great detail the mutual interaction of army and state. This book is a comprehensive study of the French army during the seventeenth century and its place in the history of state-building. |
